An awesome performance to start the new Intermediate South campaign with a win against a decent QMW team, coming off the back of a summer of turmoil. Star striker Dave Bains was subject to an audacious tapping-up bid from the forlorn Firsts, masterminded by the shadowy Mr Big, an Asian financier pretending to have a huge personal fortune. Luckily, the pocket rocket had fallen off the rails, losing both bird and calorie counter, and so the deal fell through, leaving a familiar look to the side for 2006-07.

The hot weather and huge pitch tested the Comics fitness, and it was 11 tired men that stumbled away punch-drunk with the three points. The back five were immense - Ali made a string of fine saves, while the defence overcame a shaky start to keep QMW out for the most part despite their numerous attacks. It took a goal of breath-taking quality to break the deadlock on the half-hour, as Coops managed to reach Scotty's over-hit pass and volley sublimely into the far corner from the edge of the box. Our eponymous hero added his second soon after, slotting home calmly from Tommy's slide-rule pass. Tommy himself walked in a third after weaving past keeper and defender, before ruining it slightly with a gay celebration. QMW pulled one back with a fine team goal, but the points were deservedly safe.

1 Ali McDonald   The Comics fell to old rivals Kings in disappointing fashion, as everything that could go wrong, did. From a decent squad of 12 on Thursday afternoon, they dropped like flies - Wogan injured on Thursday night, Bainsy's mate pulling out on Friday night, and Deveney struck down by blindness, rendering him unable to read the email saying he was expected to be there. So with Raj taken from the 4ths, the ten men took the field against an always strong Kings side with a mountain to climb. That we almost did was mainly down to Ali, who once again made any number of top-class saves to stop Kings running up a pinball score. That we didn't was a combination of poor finishing/final ball, some dodgy offside decisions from the coward in black, and a fairly inept performance from the outfield players. If QMW showed how far we can go when a strong side plays well, Kings showed what will happen this season if we turn up weak or short (or, in this case, weak and short). They went two up, more through shabby defending than our paucity of numbers, but Bainsy pulled one back from a Coops cross. We had plenty of good possession and a few chances after that, but couldn't get the breaks we would need when a man down. They added a third in the last minute after the ref inexplicably missed a foul on G. A game we would have won with a full side, but ultimately we got what we deserved.

The Comics returned to winning ways, despite once again playing with ten for a large part of the game. With a few key men returning, Sedcopians never looked like winning, especially once Coops drilled home following an unselfish pass from Scotty. One nil at half-time, the Comics found themselves virtually down to nine, as first Tommy got a dead leg, and then G saw red for hurling some big fool halfway across the pitch. The bigger they are, the harder they fall, and G can feel proud for his first knockdown, having been unable to manage the feat in his humbling loss to the UBS pen-pusher. Just when it looked like we might drop more points, Bainsy scored a fine individual goal to seal matters. Three goals in the last three minutes capped a fine rearguard action, as Tommy coasted through the pain barrier and half their team, and then Coops and Scotty headed home. The boys found time to unwind in the lounge bar among the throw pillows and chase longes, a fine place for hospitality, which was just missing a couple of hookers. Bainsy and Si chose to warm down post-drinks with a marathon in search of a train station, "but that's wot i fink bainsy wood do". :D

This was less Economicals versus Mickleham, more Civilisation versus the Mesozoic era. The Comics made a sluggish start against a team that seemed composed from a sketch show, and a combination of poor passing, sloppy finishing and basic mistakes meant it was only one nil at half time, courtesy of a calm finish by Bainsy. However, the second half brought a change of fortune, less to do with an improvement in our own play, but more that their elderly steam trains hit the buffers and their Ali G impersonators started thinking about their respective Julies. Bainsy completed a hat-trick, including the statutory 'diving header' that again sounds good but was rubbish, Tommy and Mo got two each and Coops also nabbed a cheap one. Scoring was made easier by the opponents' bizarre game plan of just appealing for imaginary fouls/offsides. Chumps. Even old man Gollogly robbed one of them. So, a typical Comics performance, right down to Si having an Elephant Man-style facial complaint.

A forgettable game, certainly by me, as I don't remember it, wandering around for 45 minutes in a drunken haze, unable to get the sight of Old Man Gollogly's work at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital Burns Unit the night before. They were not great (four leagues below), but had a great spirit and battled hard. We think we're good, but on this occasion for sure, were not. It made for an odd game, very scrappy and awful to watch. Despite this, most of us chose to watch the first half rather than get involved. Tommy scored, Mo scored (after everyone else stopped), 2-0 half-time. Mo completed a hat-trick in the second half with a screamer, and Stants came off the bench to grab two cheap ones. They got a consolation, but into the next round of the cup we go.

The Comics suffered a hefty defeat against a strong Witan side, after falling apart in the second half. The opposition took an early lead when Boz tripped their winger in the box, but the Comics roared back with three goals in five minutes, through a penalty from Bainsy, a tap in from Tommy and then the goal of the game when Mo's pinpoint 50 yard ball found Bainsy, who calmly chipped the oncoming keeper. Witan pulled one back just before the end of the first half, and we knew we had a game on our hands. Then it all went wrong. They were first to everything and massively up for it, while we were lacklustre, made basic mistakes and failed to compete all round the pitch. Most games this season will be like this, and we have to get back to basics and do the simple things right. They were a very good side - strong, big and fast - but no team should maul us like that, and it must not happen again.

After last week's debacle, the Comics bounced back with a spirited performance to do the double over Sedcopians. It didn't look good in the run-up to the match, with Miller withdrawing to witness the birth of his daughter - that's Coops' 50th birthday present sorted - and G's mate dropping out both late in the day. When Stelios, pinched from the firsts, went off early in the first half, it did not look good. Bainsy finished nicely from Tommy's smart pass, and added a penalty when they handled in the box. But even at 2-0 up, with ten men and Boz at centre-back, this was a very loseable game. However, all battled hard this week, with Cyril outstanding - setting up one and saving another - and Boz composed in his new role, it was fairly comfortable. Tommy added a third after beating the offside trap, a just reward for his efforts around the park, and we won't mention Coops' header, reminiscent of Sinjuns on the last day two years ago. Scotty saw red near the end along with one of their poshos after an argument over which home counties hardman had the best handbag, leaving the remaining nine men to finish the game with new-found friendship and harmony.

A 2-2 draw with the old rivals, which could be seen as two points dropped or a point gained, depending on whether you are part of Boz and Bainsy's 'free love' brigade or Scotty's boot camp. The Comics took a two-goal lead within the first 20 minutes courtesy of two nice strikes from Bainsy, but an already scratch side was further weakened by an injury to Si, leaving the booze brothers from the thirds to fill in. Dave T and Healy performed admirably though, and generally it was a decent performance. However, a mix-up between Rob and the loon let in Kings for a soft goal, and then Rob blundered again in the second half to allow an equaliser. We had a few chances to win, but in all fairness got what we deserved.

And so to the team night out. Coops stopped by police. Coops and Rob called 'sad losers' by pint-pot strippers. Bainsy: "I was really hurt by your criticism". Bainsy stopped by police. G and Scotty hitting each other. Bainsy pulling a 17-year-old. G, asleep in a toilet cubicle, trousers round his ankles and cock in hand, being filmed by a gang of schoolkids on their phones.

The Comics recorded an easy victory to march on to the next round of the cup. Against a team from three divisions below, it was a contest for the first half as they battled gamely, and we went in two goals up with numerous chances missed. As they tired, we strolled away with it in the second half, adding a further six. Steffen returned to the side after a lengthy absence and scored the first with a smart finish from Rob's cross - poetry in motion it was. Then followed the Mo show, as the Mexican maestro struck four times, including a couple of tidy strikes. Bainsy got his standard two goals for the fourth game running, and I can't remember who got the last...

Oh yes, that's right. It says something about the standard of the oppo when a ruminating cow that was grazing alongside the pitch suddenly starts doing step-overs, Cruyff turns, mazy dribbles and delightful dinks. That's how he saw the wrecking ball performance anyway. And as a cross bounced off a corner of his cube head to complete the scoring, the gloating that would inevitably ensue made us long for him to fall asleep on the toilet again.

The Comics signed off in 2006 with a hard-fought win, coming from behind to edge a scrappy game in the last ten minutes. A bright start should have brought an early goal, but then Chislehurst Sports put their own stamp on the game and took control. They were a team straight out of the premiership, full of aggression, moaning and cheating...the only way to tell the difference was that fat blokes in replica shirts were playing at the back rather than throwing coins in the stands. But it was not an undeserved lead they took just before half-time with a fine header, such was the lack of quality in the Comics passing and the lack of composure in the penalty box.

Without ever really improving, the Comics began to get on top of the tiring opposition, while the back four held out comfortably with another solid showing. LSE debutant Gaz Fishlock was bundled over in the box and Bainsy slotted home the penalty past their excellent goalkeeper. With ten minutes left they combined for the winner as Bainsy somehow outjumped their butter mountain to flick the ball into Coops' path. Their keeper saved well but Gaz rolled the rebound into an empty net, and so it was that good triumphed over evil in the feelgood Christmas story.

1 Ali McDonald   Cup tragedy for the Comics, as an under-strength Seconds came within 30 seconds of the crime of the century, before succumbing to shootout heartache. With three dropouts in the 36 hours before kick-ff, it was only the Fourths being cancelled that allowed us to field a full side. With Cleggy on the bench, it was going to need the oppo to be gash for us to have a chance, but sadly they were a decent side. We took the lead hen Bainsy nodded home on the line from Tommy's knockdown, but it was only a combination of woeful finishing on their part, great saves from Ali and an inspired performance from the back four that we were not massacred. Bizarrely, we dominated the final 15 minutes and looked to be holding on comfortably, only for them to finally find the net with a mere 30 seconds left. Extra time came and went, and it was left to penalties. The veterans stepped up and slipped up, and Pizza Hut were as delighted as Edmontonians to have Coops and Theo to front the new campaign, as consumers had grown weary of Vinesh 'Mr Poppadom' Fuckawalla Karia's face and the conglomerate had become tired of him asking how much Stuart Pearce and Gareth Southgate had earned.

1 Ali McDonald   The title hopes crashed down to Earth with a bump. Yes, we had a weak team, and yes we played garbage, but full marks to an oppo that were head and shoulders and torsos and legs and feet ahead of us in terms of skill, strength and desire. They hammered us, and but for Ali it could have been much worse. Some played better than others (notably Steffen and Bainsy), but it was not good.

And so it was onto Si's engagement party for most of the side. Scotty rolled back the years to football dinner 2002 by turning up in a t-shirt, Boz crashed and burned after veering off his favourite path of pregnant cap-wearing chavs, Bainsy showed he is on the road to becoming a fat hairy Indian, CH puked down a wall, Theo pulled, no one else did, Deano failed to get it up and Vini was charming/sleazy, depending on whether you were him, or the many women he smoothly serenaded, before turning away and saying, within their earshot, that he "will bang her later".

1 Ali McDonald   What a difference a week makes, as the Comics avenged the early season loss to Witan in style. Yes they were weaker, but with the Comics showing loads of spirit and quality they would have been a match for anyone. With Boz's fatter cousin bolstering the back ranks and Kojak unable to solve the mystery of who stole his ability in midfield, the boys pulled together and banished last week to the dustbin of memory. In an even first half, the Comics went in three to the good, due to solid defending and ruthless finishing from Tommy, Bainsy and Steffen, again having a great game. Ali saved a pen but they followed up while all but Mr Angry watched, but further goals from Tommy, Scotty and a return to the scoresheet from Coops made sure their other strikes would be but mere consolation. All that remained was some good old-fashioned trash talk from Coops, the rage from Scotty and Bainsy to miss the easiest chances you will ever see. And so it was that the season was kept alive for another week, and three points at Chislehurst next week will keep promotion hopes alive.

1 Ali McDonald   The Comics came close to avenging the recent 5-0 thumping, but had to settle for a hard-earned point against the talented Thorntonians side. For the second game running, the Seconds showed great heart and fight and pulled together as a team, and once again they overmatched a team that had swept them aside in the reverse fixture. Despite not being able to touch the ball for the first 20 minutes, the Comics held firm, tracked men, defended resolutely and eventually wore down Thorntonians and began to get on top. It was certainly not against the run of play when the again-impressive Steffen got between keeper and defender to poke home, and with some more quality in the final third the lead could have been doubled. Sadly, in the closing stages the first time we failed to clear lines at the back, their big striker extricated himself from Miller's pocket for the first time in the game and swept home despite Ali's fine effort. Both sides had late chances but a draw was probably a fair result between two talented sides. But with too many great performances to mention for a second week running, the Comics should be looking to charge up the table if they can maintain this sort of form.

1 Ali McDonald   A double-header against Reigatians should not have been too difficult on the past two games' form, but with a bare 11, including two debutants (a 'soccer' player and a non-footballer), on a quagmire, it was a magnificent effort from the Comics to come away with six points. Goal-less after the first 30 minutes, the Seconds began to come to terms with conditions and get on top, and took the lead when Rob Dunster combined with Coops in a way his sister never could, allowing Coops to cross for Steffen to stroke home. They grabbed a late equaliser, only for Pat Fear in his rookie season to cross the 30, the 20, the 10 before hitting a home run from three-point range to seal the win. Somme-like conditions, Americans arriving late to claim the glory...the only thing separating it from being World War One was the tall German being on the winning side. Bainsy grabbed an early penalty in the second game, and then we held on grimly while missing chance after chance as more and more players gradually ran out of steam. Special mentions to Scotty and Tommy, still going strong at the end and covering every blade of mud, the two debutants, and the defensive unit, excellent as always. Promotion hopes remain alive...just.

1 Farrukh Shaida   The Comics' promotion hopes came crashing down to Earth following a poor performance against a much-improved Mickleham side. The pitch was dreadful, and they coped with it far better, but it would still have been a comfortable three points but for some sloppy mistakes at the back, poor passing throughout the side and a lack of composure in front of goal (except for Wogan, who took his chance smartly, albeit at the wrong end). 1 Mark Veitch   The Comics returned to winning ways after last week's aberration, putting away a poor QMW side with relative ease. This was no mean feat, bearing in mind a debutant keeper, the return of Dunster down the left flank and a new formation, with Scotty joined in the centre by Coops and Boz, aka Jan Molby and Claude Ukelele. The three centre-backs were back on form, Rob Allen worked tirelessly down the right wing, and Rob D kept everyone guessing, including himself, with his fancy footwork, while Veitch looked composed between the sticks and boomed many a kick upfield. The Comics were profligate in front of goal, but two was enough this week. Tommy unselfishly set up Scotty for an open goal, and then Bainsy flicked home smartly after Rob Allen had created havoc in the box from Coops' cross. While the oppo were weak, this wasn't a bad show, with some nice passing on display after two weeks on mudbaths, and with key players back next week for a pivotal double-header, the promotion race is back on.

1 Ali McDonald   Promotion dreams stayed alive at Berrylands as the Comics used the smoke and mirrors to great effect to come away with four points against high-flying Josephians. We were all over the shop, but still should have been up comfortably but for Karia's wasteful finishing. The return of the white feather was not really working, as badger Whippe strove hard on his first steps on the hallowed lawns in ten years, but time has not been kind to the silver fox. Coops rocketed in a long-range free-kick, but Josephs quickly put two away. Scotty - having now abandoned his master plan of letting Coops and Boz do the midfield work - equalised just before half-time, and we held on for a fortuitous point, courtesy of Ali's penalty save and some dogged defending from our tall trees. With Vini replaced by Rob D, and a goal down at the end of the third quarter, it didn't look good. However, the shambolic mob that is the Comics often finds a way. Rob D decided to stop treading on the ball, and instead bombed up the field, skinned their entire right flank and laid it up for the immense Tommy C to stroke home. When Scotty was held in the box and Lionel pointed to the spot, the big fella added a second in game two, before Scotty flicked one on for young Coops, the rampaging striker, to power home to seal the deal. With only three minutes left, there was still time for Ali to make two of the best saves you will ever see, continuing his awesome season. And so ended one of the more satisfactory games there's been. Great effort turned a lost cause into four points. Well done everyone. Is it better than watching two rugby teams you don't support? 1 Mark Veitch   We finally had a full side to choose from (except the hard-working Ali), and we actually played pretty well, but it was not enough against a very strong Centymca side who are worthy of winning the league by a mile, which they inevitably will do. Both games were tight, and on another day we could well have got more from them, but in the end they had a bit more quality in the final third, and made fewer mistakes, and that was the difference. Wogan easily won his battle against Gary Coleman's evil twin, but around the park we were marginally second best throughout, especially with the new centre-midfield partnership of Hollow Man and Patrick Swayze from Ghost failing to gel, and Matt Miller distracted by the shock news that the lab had returned the DNA results and yes Barry Chuckle is his real father. Coops was lucky to escape a red for a professional foul, mitigating circumstances being that as no one had ever seen him tackle before, there was doubt as to what his true intentions were.

So no shame in double defeat, but we must ensure that we get this sort of side, in numbers and quality, out more often in order to progress. That and learn to pass, but one step at a time...

This was a complete team performance - no mistakes, dogged defending, banks of four as per Scotty's leaf plan and some quality in the final third - and was more than enough versus a team that only brought aggression and buffoonery to the table. Ravanelli's fat uncle clearly hadn't forgotten me from the first game, but just in case he had I fouled him in the same way early doors to remind him. The rest of the game can be summed up like this: "I lost two weeks of work", I scored a pen after Rob was fouled, then added a second before half time. "I lost two weeks of work. have you got kids?" Scotty chipped their ratboy in goal for a third. "I need to feed mah family. Don't give it bunny. You know what you did. I lost two weeks of work." I completed a hat-trick to the background of someone going on about something...how many weeks or work, what happened? At least this time the good people of Chislehurst can sleep easy, knowing that their pizzas will be delivered this week."

1 Ali McDonald   Six points was the requirement from the last action of the season, and the Comics just about managed it against a dogged Sutts side that were a lot better than their league position suggested. G's long throws caused havoc all day, and from one a Sutts player put through his own net. Job done we all thought, only for them to equalise swiftly. As the minutes ticked down in game one, promotion chances began to slip away, but cometh the hour cometh the man and all that, as wily old Coops curled in a free-kick to bring home the points. Game two saw the Comics play much better, but many chances were missed and at 0-0 at half-time and with many players struggling with niggles, again it did not look good. It took a woeful keeping error to get us in the box seat, as Bainsy chased a lost cause to the edge of the box and nicked it out of the keeper's hands as he waited to pick it up, before rolling it in. Theo capped a fine season and made the game safe by powering home a header from a Coops corner, and the Comics ran down the clock with ease. Now we just wait for results to hopefully go our way.
